New Jersey’s concussion law (AB 2743) signed into law by Governor Christie on December 7, 2010 was an important step in battling the concussion crisis.  The current bill allows a physician or other licensed healthcare provider to evaluate a student-athlete who has been removed from sports activity due to a concussion or other head injury, but only a physician can provide written clearance for a student-athlete to return to play.  On January 30, 2012, SB 1228 was introduced that would allow physicians and any licensed healthcare provider trained in evaluation and management of concussions to provide written return to play clearance for student-athletes who sustained a head injury.

We will closely monitor the progress of this proposed legislation.
