Specialty Programs

Manual Physical Therapy

Manual physical therapy emphasizes a hands-on approach to physical examination and treatment of orthopedic conditions. Through the use of skilled hand movements and evidence-based clinical reasoning, manual physical therapy intends to “improve tissue extensibility, increase range of motion and joint mobility, induce relaxation, and modulate pain” (Guide to Physical Therapy Practice, 2001). Manual physical therapy assists in finding the cause of the problem rather than treating symptoms which leads to optimal outcomes and functional restoration.

Specialized Physical Therapy features physical therapists who have received advanced training in manual physical therapy and who have earned board certification in orthopedics, manual therapy certification and Fellowship status in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists.

Vestibular Rehabilitation/Balance Retraining

Vestibular rehabilitation is a treatment approach for those individuals who suffer from inner-ear disorders. The primary goals of vestibular rehabilitation are to eliminate/decrease dizziness, improve balance, and to improve general activity levels. The most common cause of peripheral vertigo, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), is successfully treated in our office. Balance retraining seeks to improve an individual’s balance reactions, coordination, and postural control to decrease risk of falling and promote the highest level of function possible. As part of the program, the Nintendo Wii™ System is used. Specialized Physical Therapy works closely with referring physicians, including neurologists and Ears, Nose, and Throat physicians.

Diabetes Exercise Program

Research demonstrates that proper diet and exercise are essential in the overall management of diabetes, especially Type II Diabetes. In fact, proper diet and exercise can help prevent the onset of diabetes for those individuals who are at risk for developing the disease. Properly control blood glucose levels with physical therapist supervised exercise. Our skilled physical therapists can show you how to properly exercise (what type of exercise, when to exercise, and how much to exercise). Specialized Physical Therapy works closely with nutritionists and physicians to facilitate optimal outcomes.

Orthotics

Precise measuring and casting of an individual’s feet allows us to address common biomechanical foot problems which can lead to conditions such as plantar fasciitis, over-pronation (flat feet), knee pain, hip pain, and low back pain. Orthotics can help correct faulty biomechanics of the feet which helps get the individual moving around pain free.
